Emergency Evacuation Procedure

Location: Whangamata War Memorial Hall, Port Road, Whangamata

Applies to: All students, staff, volunteers, and visitors

General Principles

• Stay Calm – students to follow teacher/assistant instructions.

• Safety First – life before property. Leave belongings behind.

• Accountability – teachers ensure roll is taken once safe.

Earthquake

• During shaking: DROP, COVER, HOLD until shaking stops. Stay away from windows, mirrors, lighting, and stacked equipment.

• After shaking stops: Teachers lead students calmly out through the nearest safe exit.

• Gather at assembly point: grass area opposite the Hall on Port Road.

• Check for injuries, take roll, await Civil Defence/all-clear. Tsunami (local or distant source)

• If strong earthquake felt (hard to stand) or long shaking (over 1 min): Immediately evacuate inland and uphill. Do not wait for official warning. From Port Road, proceed up Chevron Crescent to high ground.

• If Civil Defence sirens sound or official alert received: Follow advice and evacuate to Chevron Crescent high ground as above, even without shaking.

• Teachers escort classes on foot; parents may collect children at the safe zone only once accounted for.

Flooding / Severe Weather

• If flooding risk identified by Civil Defence or Hall management: Evacuate before floodwaters rise.

• Move inland/uphill to Chevron Crescent or follow Civil Defence staff directions.

• Avoid driving through floodwaters, proceed on foot with group if safe.

Fire or Other Immediate Threat

• Activate alarm and call 111. If alarm is going off inside the building, 111 will automatically be advised

•Evacuate using nearest safe exit – no lifts.

• Assemble at grass area opposite Hall on Port Road.

• Take roll and await Fire Service instructions.

Responsibilities

• Teachers/Assistants: Direct students, take roll, report missing persons to Emergency Services.
